CDPH Order Limits Apartment Resident Guests to Six Per Unit

As part of the Phase IV: Gradually Reopening Guidelines, the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) announced reinstatement of certain restrictions regarding Prohibited Gatherings effective Friday, July 24th, including a new restriction on the number of guests in apartment residences.  The new Health Order states: “If the Gathering is within a private residence, any gathering of more than six people who do not reside within that household is a Prohibited Gathering.”  According to the guidance, “Residential property managers will be asked to limit guest entry to six per unit to avoid indoor gatherings and parties.”

For larger buildings, doormen and on-site staff are asked to communicate the new Health Order to residents, and all buildings are asked to post signage and utilize normal communication channels to inform residents.  While property managers are limited in their ability to strictly enforce such limits, violations should be reported to the city’s 3-1-1 non-emergency line, and more serious violations to 9-1-1.

Suggested signage could include the following "DUE TO COVID-19 GUESTS LIMITED TO 6 PER UNIT BY ORDER OF CITY OF CHICAGO."  The Order will be in effect until further notice.  Go to the city’s Reopening Business Portal website for more information.
