Chicago, Cook County, and State of Illinois Rental Assistance Programs

State and local residents struggling to pay their rent due a lost a job or reduced income as a result of COVID-19 can now apply assistance through three separate rental assistance programs offered by the city, county and state. Wherever your property is located, CARES Act funding is available to tenants who have been impacted financially by COVID-19. Tenants must initiate the application process, although property owners should be proactive in letting tenants know that these resources are available. 

State of Illinois Emergency Rental Assistance (OPEN 8/10 - 8/21) Application Deadline Extended to 8/28

Applications are now available for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERA) to support Illinois tenants (qualified at 80% AMI or less) unable to pay their rent due to a COVID-19-related loss of income. Tenants whose applications are approved will receive one-time grants of $5,000 paid directly to their landlords to cover missed rent payments since March 2020 (or prepay payments through December 2020). Tenants should be directed to apply online at: era.ihda.org between August 10th and August 21st.

Suburban Cook County Rental Assistance Program (OPEN 8/10 - 8/18)

The COVID-19 Recovery: Rental Assistance Program will pay up to three months of overdue or future rent directly to landlords by the Housing Authority of Cook County. Tenants (qualified at 80% AMI or less)can apply for rental assistance between August 10th and August 18th. City of Chicago Housing Assistance Portal (OPEN 7/27 - 8/14)

The Chicago Department of Housing will administer $34 million in direct rental assistance to Chicago residents in need. Chicago's citywide portal is accepting applicants (renters) between July 27th and August 14th. Visit chi.gov/housinghelp for more information.
